Implementation of lithium ion batteries in future technologies

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have become one of the main energy storage solutions in modern society. The application fields and market share of LIBs have increased rapidly and continue to show a steady rising trend . It would be unwise to assume that ‘conventional’ lithium-ion batteries are approaching the end of their era . Instead, current strategies are being developed to improve the current and next generation systems, where a holistic approach will be needed to unlock higher energy density while also maintaining lifetime and safety.

One advance to keep an eye on is in so-called solid-state batteries. Lithium-ion batteries and related chemistries use a liquid electrolyte that shuttles charge around; solid-state batteries replace this liquid with ceramics or other solid materials. This swap unlocks possibilities that pack more energy into a smaller space, potentially improving the range of electric vehicles. Solid-state batteries could also move charge around faster, meaning shorter charging times.

In conclusion, lithium-ion batteries are here to stay and will continue to play a key role in the transition to renewable energy. With ongoing research and development, we can expect to see even more improvements in battery technology in the future.
